Adding a Trade
Learn how to record a trade from entry to exit, document its execution and outcome, and add the context needed for meaningful reviews and accurate performance statistics.
Trading Account
As mentioned previously, selecting a trading account is optional. If you do not want to associate the trade with an account, leave this field empty.
If you have active trading accounts, the journal automatically selects the most recently added active account by default. You can change the selection at any time or choose an inactive account when adding a trade that was not recorded earlier.
Symbol
The Symbol field identifies the instrument you traded, such as NAS100, EURUSD, or BTCUSDT.
Symbols are not provided in a predefined list because of the large number of available instruments. This gives you the flexibility to enter any symbol you trade.
For accurate filtering and statistics, always enter the same instrument using a consistent format—for example, use EURUSD every time instead of alternating between EURUSD and EUR USD.
Type
The Type field indicates the direction of the trade. Select LONG if you entered the position expecting the price to rise, or select SHORT if you expected the price to fall.
Recording the trade direction consistently allows the journal to separate long and short positions in your reviews and performance statistics.
Action
The Action field describes how the trade was closed or managed. Select the option that best reflects what happened during the trade.
- TP Hit – The price reached your planned Take Profit level and the position was closed at the intended target.
- SL Hit – The price reached your Stop Loss level and the position was automatically closed to limit the loss.
- Early Exit – You closed a profitable position before it reached the planned target, often because of uncertainty, fear, or a change in your market view.
- Break Even – The trade moved into profit but later returned to the entry price, resulting in little or no profit and no significant loss.
- Held a Losing Position – You continued holding a losing position instead of closing it according to your plan, hoping that the market would reverse.
Recording the action consistently helps you identify how often trades reach their planned targets, stop losses, or are affected by early exits and poor loss management.
Grade
The Trade Grade reflects the quality of the setup that produced the trading opportunity. It should be based on how closely the setup matched your strategy and predefined criteria, not on whether the trade resulted in a profit or a loss.
Evaluate the setup according to your own trading system. A high-quality setup can still result in a losing trade, while a profitable trade does not necessarily mean that the setup was good.
- A++ - A perfect setup that meets all of your criteria.
- A+ - An excellent setup with only very minor imperfections.
- A - A good setup that meets most of your criteria.
- B++ - A reasonable setup, but some conditions are weaker or missing.
- B+ - A weak setup with several noticeable imperfections.
- B - A poor setup that only meets the minimum acceptable criteria.
Use these descriptions as a general guide and adjust the grades to match your own strategy. Apply the same standards consistently so you can compare the quality of your setups during later reviews and performance analysis.
Entry and exit time
Use the Entry and Exit fields to record when the trade was opened and closed.
- Entry Date and Time – Enter the exact date and time when the position was opened.
- Exit Date and Time – Enter the exact date and time when the position was fully closed.
These timestamps allow the journal to place the trade on the correct day, calculate how long the position was open, and include it accurately in your calendar, reviews, and performance statistics.
The current date and time are filled in automatically when you create a new trade, but you can change them when adding an older trade or correcting the recorded execution time.
Price
Use the Price fields to record the exact prices at which the position was opened and closed.
- Entry Price – Enter the price at which you entered the trade.
- Exit Price – Enter the price at which the position was fully closed.
These values provide a more complete record of the trade and help you review how the market moved between entry and exit. Enter the prices using the same decimal format shown by your broker or trading platform.
Execution
Use the Execution fields to record the position size and the final profit or loss of the trade.
- Size – Enter the numeric size of the position. This field is universal, so the value may represent lots, contracts, micro contracts, or another sizing method used by your broker. For example, enter 0.01 for 0.01 lots or 5 for five micro contracts. Enter the number only, without adding units or text.
- Profit – Enter the final result of the trade as a number. For a profitable trade, enter a positive value such as 123. For a losing trade, include a minus sign, such as -123. Enter 0 if the trade closed at break even.
Recording these values consistently allows the journal to calculate and compare your trading results accurately across the Dashboard, calendar, and Statistics pages.
Trading rules
Use the Trading Rules switch to indicate whether you followed your own trading rules throughout the trade.
- Enabled – Turn the switch on if you followed your trading plan and respected the rules you had defined for the trade.
- Disabled – Leave the switch off if you broke one or more of your trading rules, entered without a valid reason, or managed the position differently from your plan.
This field is independent of the financial result. A losing trade may still be marked as rule-following if you respected your plan, while a profitable trade should remain unmarked if the result came from breaking your rules.
Recording this consistently helps you compare disciplined trades with rule-breaking trades and better understand how your behavior affects your long-term performance.
Notes
Use the Notes field to record the context behind the trade, including the setup, your reason for entering, your expectations, and the emotions you experienced while the position was open.
Write these details as soon as possible, while your decisions and emotions are still fresh. This gives you a more accurate record than trying to remember everything later.
Once the position has been closed and you have had time to reflect, return to the trade and add a conclusion. Summarize how the trade developed, how you managed it, whether your original analysis was correct, what you did well, what could have been improved, and what you learned. You can also add new screenshots to document how the chart developed after your entry and exit.
Screenshots
Use the Images section to upload chart screenshots or other visuals that help document the trade. You can add images by dragging and dropping the files into the upload area or by selecting them with the Browse option.
After uploading multiple images, drag and drop them to change their order. The image placed first will appear first when viewing the trade, so it is useful to arrange the screenshots in a clear sequence, such as the initial setup, trade management, exit, and final outcome.
You can return to the trade later to upload additional screenshots and update the order as the review develops.
Supported formats are JPG, PNG, and WebP, with a maximum file size of 5 MB per image. Uploaded images are optimized to a maximum width or height of 1920 pixels and saved as WebP when supported.
